One Week From Today
Is the day that we soundly defeat Issue 1 and the Republican scheme to end democracy in Ohio. If you have an absentee ballot sitting on your table please get it in today to make sure it counts. And please don’t request an absentee ballot now because there may not be enough turnaround time to make sure it can be returned in time.

‘ We’re not leaving Northeastern Ohio ‘ Everything the Haslam’s said about the future of Cleveland Browns Stadium The lead quote suggests relocation to the suburbs is possible. But there are two bigger takeaways. First, the fact that they have already spoken with city, county and state officials and they gave this interview suggests that this could break soon. And second, the quote about a public – private deal suggests that they will be seeking taxpayer dollars.
Law Professor Matthew Ahn running for Cuyahoga County Prosecutor The long rumored announcement of Matthew getting into the race has finally happened! A progressive reform – minded challenger to Mike O’Malley is something we’ve been hoping for for a long time. The campaign kickoff event is Thursday, August 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm @ Rockefeller Park Pavilion, 7 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. Cleveland 44106
Participatory Budgeting Charter Amendment Will Be on the Ballot in Cleveland in November Both City Council and Mayor Bibb oppose the measure despite the fact that the charter amendment would create an 11 member committee appointed by them to decide where just 2 percent of the city’s budget should be spent. Should be an interesting campaign
Cleveland Drivers Really Are Among the Worst in US Is statistical confirmation of what those of us who drive have long thought to be true. We’re not the worst, but fifth worst in traffic fatalities of all the major cities. Have you ever been driving down the street and someone making a turn pulls right out in front of you causing you to slam on your breaks?
State
Early Votes cast in Ohio August Election Are Blowing Expectations Out of the Water Which is great news. Turnout projections now show that turnout may exceed the 2022 midterm election. How did the Republicans think they could sneak this by us when activists around the state only a month ago finished gathering 700,000 abortion access signatures?.
Who’s paying for the campaigns for and against Issue 1? Leading the list of donors who are supporting Issue 1 and the end of majority rule in Ohio is the Concord Group, a conservative dark – money group out of Washington D.C. Also notable on the list of Issue 1 supporters are numerous pro – life PAC’s and Brown’s owner Jimmy Haslam.
Ohio Expects 280,000 Residents to Lose Medicaid Coverage This Year Pandemic era provisions which expanded eligibility are expiring this year. And of course the Generally Clueless Assembly knew this when writing and passing the budget this year. And yet they provided no funding to help these poor people pay their medical bills.
Ohio becomes first state to announce EV charging stations set up with federal infrastructure funds A total of 27 stations will be set up every 50 miles along Ohio’s major interstates. Which sounds good. But what isn’t good is that you’ll have to pay about $20 just to get a 20% charge. Wonder how much money the charging station company is going to be making and what exactly did they do to get the contract?

What’s new in the new indictment against Donald Trump The biggest news in the new indictment is that it appears that Trump instructed members of his staff to destroy surveillance video after he learned that the DOJ sought the video which is obstruction of Justice. And we haven’t even gotten to the January 6 indictment which is expected soon.
UPS reaches tentative contract with 340,000 unionized workers, potentially dodging calamitous strike A tentative congratulations to our Teamsters brothers and sisters who work for UPS. Tentative because the ratification vote will take place between August 3 and 22. Let’s hope the rank and file view the contract as being fair and votes to ratify it
How College Towns Are Decimating the GOP Growing population in America’s highly educated enclaves has led to huge gains for the Democratic Party. And Republicans are scrambling for answers. But what answers do they have? Their base is the uneducated who are gullible enough to believe their propaganda.
This plan appeals to Republicans because it is the fossil – fuel industry that came up with it and because it looks like they want to do something. If you read the article you’ll find that it won’t actually work. Remember just a few years ago when the Republicans were all climate deniers? Even for them denial is now impossible.
Black Lives Matter
The unique staying power of #BlackLives Matter 10 years later The hashtag first appeared in July 2013 following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in 17 year – old Trayvon Martin’s shooting death. Now, 10 years later it has been tweeted 44 million times as a symbol of unity against the continued atrocities committed against Black people.
New Florida standards teach that Black people benefited from slavery because it taught useful skills With of course no statistical or historical primary source data to back up the claim. When numerous Category 5 hurricanes start hitting Florida because of climate change, maybe Fascist DeSantis could use a similar logic and tell his constituents that the hurricanes are actually good because they prevent people from getting sunburned.
Billions available to the Ohio economy if racial disparities were eliminated The Health Policy Institute studied disparities experienced by Black and Hispanic Ohioans and how improvements in their health and ” economic vitality ” could improve the state in those categories as well. The conclusion was the state would gain $79 billion or about 43% of the budget recently passed.
Biden will establish a national monument honoring Emmett Till, the Black teen lynched in Mississippi The monument’s will protect places that are central to the story of Till’s life and death at age 14, the acquittal of hi white killers and his mother’s activism. They will be spread across three locations in Illinois and Mississippi. Hope there will be good security at the Mississippi location’s.
Immigration
Biden Deportation Tracker If you haven’t already checked this out please do so now. The numbers are staggering
Federal judge block’s Biden’s controversial asylum policy in a major blow to the administration But great news for immigration advocates. During the Trump administration the same judge blocked a similar policy that Trump proposed. In this ruling he found ” little daylight ” between the Trump policy and Biden’s. Unfortunately the Department of Justice is appealing the ruling
Texas governor to defy DOJ request to remove floating barriers in Rio Grande: ‘ Texas will see you in court, Mr. President ‘ The Rivers and Harbors Act clearly prohibits any obstruction to navigable waters and also prohibits any structure in the waters without approval of the Army Corps of Engineers. Should be a no-brainer in court unless of course a Trump-appointed fascist hears the case, Kind of think ‘ Remember the Alamo ‘ would have been a better quote from the governor.
For asylum seekers, the giant US immigration backlog can be a boon The US may have become more attractive asylum seekers because they can work and make money for years while waiting for their case to inch through the system. Asylum seekers wait on average about four years for even a first hearing and then more years until their case is adjudicated
