Chris Ronayne’s First State of the County Centers on Reform and Opportunity Talk of climate change was especially prescient at the event since it was originally scheduled for Wednesday but had to be postponed until Friday because of the smoke from the Canadian wildfires. Chris is a great speaker and it all sounded wonderful.
What the Supreme Court’s stance on race – conscious admissions means for Cleveland’s colleges Out of Cleveland’s higher education institutions, only Case Western Reserve University currently looks at race when considering applicants. About 15% of the campus’ total enrollment last fall was made up of underrepresented minority students
The Northeast Ohio Neighborhood Health Service frequently had few patients and lost money. The ARPA funds were initially approved in the last days of the Frank Jackson and Kevin Kelley administrations. That $2 million could be much better spent elsewhere.
Cleveland Officials Test Promise of Community Benefits Ordinance’s Impact on Underrepresented Groups If it works as expected the new Community Benefits Ordinance is a good thing. It gives financial incentives to developers who work with minority – owned, women – owned and Cleveland – based businesses
A path of their owns: Cleveland bikeway projects would improve safety, accessibility for cyclists The latest project would create bike sections on most of Lorain and Superior and hopefully diminish the number of cars on those streets. A special thanks to our friends at Bike Cleveland for their work in making this happen.
State
Both the House and Senate versions were terrible. And the compromise is too. Tax cuts sound good but as usual the wealthy benefit more. And how do you feel about our tax dollars now being used to subsidize tuition for every student in Ohio whose parents chose to send them to a private school?
Ex – Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder sentenced to maximum 20 years Once one of the most powerful politicians in Ohio, Householder is now a convicted felon, guilty of racketeering conspiracy and breaking the public’s trust. After Thursday’s sentence was read he was immediately taken into custody.
Statehouse legislators need to stop making ratepayers subsidize costly coal burning power plants According to the Ohio Consumers Council, which represents residential utility ratepayers, Ohio electricity customers have so far paid for $164 million in subsidies for two historically money – losing generating stations who are also generating high levels of pollution. And in case you forgot, this is courtesy of HB 6 which still has not yet been repealed
Environmental Experts Warn Fracking on State Lands in Ohio is Dangerous, Economically Dubious Probably all of you are aware of the environmental danger of fracking anywhere. What’s new in this article are the comments from CCPC member and environmental scientist with the FracTracker Alliance Ted Auch that fracking isn’t always the commercial success story the industry claims.
The proposal would require voters to register with the state as a Democrat or Republican weeks or even months before Primary Election Day in order to participate in their respective party’s primary. Another obvious attempt by the fascist Republicans to lower voter participation.

Climate change keeps making wildfires and smoke worse. Scientists call it the ‘ new abnormal.’ As Earth’s climate continues to change from heat – trapping gases spewed into the air, ever fewer people are out of reach from the billowing and deadly fingers of wildfire smoke. We live in one of the safest areas overall from potential climate change disasters. But not last week. And the smoke is likely to return when the winds next come in from the northwest.
Pride Month Marked by ‘ Unprecedented ‘ Backlash The Human Rights Campaign has created a first – of – its – kind National State of Emergency for the LGBTQ+ community and has dubbed 2023 ” a year of Challenge.” After years of growing acceptance, polls are now showing failing support of the LGBTQ+ community. The cause of course is the homophobic racist Republican propaganda machine.
Supreme Court rejects Biden’s plan to wipe away $400 billion in student loans There is no logic to this. These are federal loans so why can’t the entity issuing the loans forgive them. Maybe it’s because most college educated people are Democrats and most Republicans are not college educated. Wonder how this court would have ruled if that was reversed?
‘ Ego, pure delusion and fantasy’: How the 2024 GOP field got so big Most don’t expect to win. A failed presidential bid is often a ladder to bigger and better things. And even if you’re far behind you could be promised something by the front runner to get out of the race. How do you think Kamala Harris became Vice – President and Pete Buttigieg became Transportation Secretary.
A symbol of unity? Views on the American flag sometimes fall on party lines. Eighty – three percent of Republicans, 61 percent of Independents and 49 percent of Democrats have a positive view of the flag, Wonder what the percentage is in the progressive community and how many of you might be fling the flag today.
Black Lives Matter
The Supreme Court guts affirmative action, effectively ending race – conscious admissions The principle of Affirmative Action had been upheld by decades of precedent. But again this rogue court decided on what they wanted to happen and legislated from the bench. If you want to get even more angered please read Clarence Thomas Benefited From Race – Based Preferences Throughout His Career
France is roiled by protests after police killed a teenager This has eerie similarities to what we experienced nationwide after George Floyd’s murder in 2020. The teenager was a Black person. The police were white. The murder was caught on tape. The protests are all across France. And the the police are responding with brutality. Black Lives Matter in France too.
Protesters sue Akron officers over arrests of Jayland Walker demonstrators Twenty – four people who were randomly arrested last year filed the suit last Thursday against the mayor, police chief and numerous other officers. We wish them luck with the lawsuit.
The extremist group and its leaders are also barred from coming near the church and making inflammatory comments against the pastor. The ruling was a default judgement because the boys weren’t even proud enough to show up and defend themselves in the case.
A federal appeals court recently ruled that a cop can sue a protest organizer or a leader of an organization doing a protest even if the person who caused harm has no affiliation to the organizer or organization. Wonder if the judge is affiliated with the Proud Boys.
Immigration
Illinois to Make Standard Driver’s Licenses Available to Non Citizens Regardless of Immigration Status Before we get to the usual bad news in this section we thought it might be good to lead with a little bit of good news. You can find this week’s immigration atrocities from the Biden administration and Fascist DeSantis below
Biden Deportation Tracker Is now going to be featured weekly in this space. It tracks the number of confirmed apprehensions, deportations and expulsions under Biden since he became president in 2021. Before clicking the link try to guess what the current number is. Hint: it’s large
Biden is making a shambles of the right to seek asylum The Biden administration recently said that its border plan is working as intended. What they failed to acknowledge is that the border plan is completely contrary to his campaign promise to end inhumane Trump – era border policies.
Lechlietner is a career Homeland Security investigator and very likely is the perfect choice to make sure Biden’s draconian immigration policies are executed. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
DeSantis takes aim at Trump on immigration Hard to believe anyone could be more heartless on immigration issues than Trump. But Fascist DeSantis is trying. How about his proposal to put migrants in jail before their asylum hearings and not letting them into the country until their asylum hearing is completed.
