Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb calls out judges for being ‘ too loose ‘ with repeat offenders: ‘ we need real judicial accountability Remember in 2021 when he supported Issue 24. Remember in 2021 when he defeated Kevin Kelley and Dennis Kucinich who both had tough on crime platforms. Our progressive mayor? Or is it becoming meet the new boss, same as the old boss?
Cleveland City Council Hits Pause on Plan to Give $20 Million to Digital C for Expanded Low – Cost Internet Service The Utilities Committee pushed this back to a July meeting because Digital C had previously promised to expand services but failed to do so. Currently only about 2000 of the city’s 127,000 households are being serviced by Digital C. About 30% of Clevelanders currently lack a household internet connection.
Five big pieces of legislation passed by Cleveland City Council At last week’s meeting 40 pieces of legislation were passed, many allocating chunks of federal pandemic relief dollars. The most important new legislation appears to be a new community benefits agreement that will attach strings to public subsidies for development projects.
Another landlord leaves Cleveland residents scrambling for housing From the road the Euclid Estates apartment complex appears tidy and clean. But the building’s interior is in shambles. Another case of an out of town landlord who refuses to even do regular maintenance. Very sad.

Court filing – State Issue 1 backers acknowledge error in ballot language, but say it doesn’t matter Well actually it does matter because that’s what many voters will read before casting their ballot. It is very rare in a court proceeding for one side to admit the other side is right. Unless of course you know that the court is in your back pocket.
LaRose says Issue 1 is ‘100%’ about stopping possible abortion amendment This is an extremely rare instance of Fascist Frank actually telling the truth publicly. One has to wonder if they are abandoning their ” stop outside special interests from influencing our constitution ” farce. One has to also wonder why they would do that when between 58% and 62% of Ohioans support the abortion access constitutional amendment.
Ohio Solar Projects Face an Unclear Path Around Local Opposition The Ohio Power Siting Board is now citing local opposition as a reason to reject permits even though the law mandates that it consider likely environmental impact and whether it will serve the public interest, convenience and necessity.
More Ohioans Skipping Meals to Pay for Household Expenses 68% of Food Bank clients reported that in the last two to three months, they’ve chosen between paying for food, transportation or gas. Meanwhile the Republican controlled General Assembly is finishing their biennial budget with more tax cuts for the wealthy and little help for the poor.

Trump charged with 37 counts in classified documents case, indictment says The worst part of this is wondering who Trump showed or sold the documents to. Some or which were classified Pentagon attack plans. And now the hard part. How do you find an impartial jury? Do you know of anybody who has no opinion on Trump? And if you do find an impartial jury, how do you keep them and their families safe?
As smoke darkens the sky, the future becomes clear As we all noticed last week this was also a local news item. But the smoke and haze from the Canadian wildfires was actually much worse in the northeast. The clear cause was drought caused by climate change, The clear effect was another huge disaster that humans could not stop. And as this column argues, is the future if we don’t act on climate change.
Supreme Court’s conservative majority to decide direction on race elections and religious freedom this month It’s that time of year again when we await the court’s end of June decisions that we know we are going to be outraged at. This year we are not likely to be as outraged as last year’s repeal of Roe v. Wade. But this year’s menu has a lot of potential to reverse long standing precedent that we have taken for granted. As gun violence spikes, any confrontation can turn deadly, innocent bystanders become unlikely victims Describes the horrible world we live in. It’s a world of the Republicans, by the Republicans and for the Republicans. In Ohio and in many other red states a gun can be purchased and concealed without a license, training or background check
Last year Republican state legislators in Arkansas and South Dakota placed ballot measures similar to Ohio Issue 1 and both failed. It is believed that what happens in Ohio on August 8 will send a strong message to the entire country one way or the other.
Black Lives Matter
What happened to Criminal Justice Reform? It seems like only yesterday that criminal justice reform was in vogue. But then the inevitable backlash from the right. Crime rates were historically low during the Pandemic. But when they started to rise again the right wing propaganda convinced many that it was time to get tough on crime.
Don’t ‘ Punish Them More.’ Effort Grows to Ease Job Barriers After Prison Release Nearly 2000 formerly incarcerated people return to Cleveland each year with few job prospects. Most jobs available for the formerly incarcerated don’t pay a living wage that would support a family – or even the ability to afford reliable transportation if the job was not close to home.
US Supreme Court backs Alabama Black voters, bolsters civil rights law This is a big surprise. Although it was very obvious that the Alabama Republicans gerrymandered their congressional districts to disenfranchise Black voters it was also equally obvious that this court usually sides with any Republican agenda. Some had feared they might even overturn the Voting Rights Act so this is great news!
Memphis seems to be becoming ground zero for police shootings.Jaylin McKenzie was shot and killed by an MPD officer in December of 2022. His death was a part of a string of five police shootings in Memphis that continued into this year.
Immigration
” What’s Coming Is a Tsunami:” Cleveland Needs to Be More Prepared to Help Incoming Latin Immigrants An incoming surge of Latin American migrants is expected to arrive in Cleveland in the coming months. Cleveland Ward 14 City Councilwoman Jasmin Santana met with community leaders to strategize on how to provide the services they will be needing when they arrive
Trapped at work: Immigrant health care workers can face harsh working conditions and $100,000 lawsuits for quitting Hospitals and nursing homes have filled thousands of vacant positions with health care workers recruited from abroad, who say they are bound in some instances by contracts that impose tens of thousands of dollars in penalties for leaving and threats of lawsuits for not paying.
Florida Republicans Admit They Made a Big Mistake With Anti – Immigrant Law After sparking a backlash among thousands of immigrants ( who make up a great deal of Florida’s economy ), some Florida Republicans are trying to backpedal and do damage control. We can’t actually wish them good luck in their efforts.
This of course is Fascist DeSantis’ latest political stunt to impress the Republican xenophobic and racist base. But the legal reality that California may be pursuing is that Florida may be guilty of false imprisonment and/or kidnapping
