In North Coast Waterfront Development Corporation, the Mayor and Council Hide Behind Unelected Body And hide is exactly what they are doing. This is an excellent piece by legendary journalist Roldo Bartimole. As Roldo points out, this new unelected body will be making the decisions about lakefront development without having committee hearings or contentious votes that the public could see. And what’s still unknown is what their budget will be and who will fund it.

Taxpayer costs rising at Progressive Field, Gateway Board Chair warns The Guardians are now projecting that $40 million to $50 million more will be needed to complete the $202.5 million first phase of the $435 million renovation approved in 2019.Their stated reason is that labor and material costs have risen. There is little doubt that the actual cost of the $435 million renovation will actually be well above $500 million. Meanwhile city and county taxpayers are waiting to see how much the Browns will be asking for to renovate their stadium.

Cleveland City Council Considering Limiting Public Comment to Topics Currently Under Consideration by the Body Part of the concept of public comment is to bring items to the attention of a governing body which they might not be aware of. Limiting it to items under consideration defeats that purpose. City Council’s best approach might be to do nothing and leave it as it is. Turning the mic off to silence negative commenters is what’s bringing the media attention, not the negative comments which were there from day one.

Superior Midway. City’s Biggest Bike Lane Project, Debuts to Public Feedback The plan is that Superior’s six lanes between Public Square and E. 55th St would be reduced to four. With the other two lanes being reserved for bike’s and pedestrians. Business owners expressed concern that the project would need to be completed quickly so that they wouldn’t have to go too long without street parking. Bike riders expressed concerns about cars and trucks turning at intersections and their safety when going over the I – 90 bridge

Ohio Republicans Weigh Response After Losing at the Ballot Box on Abortion, Marijuana A minority of lunatic Republicans in the House want to ignore the constitutional amendment and the Ohio Supreme Court and declare themselves the judicial authority on abortion issues. Which is what fascists do, but thankfully House Speaker Jason Stephens says this isn’t going to happen. Gov. No Spine DeWine wants to accept the election but believes Issue 2 needs ” additional protections.”

Exit polls showed independent voters decided Ohio’s election on abortion and marijuana Since Republicans have recently carried most statewide elections this data can be looked at with two questions. One is: did the Republican Party totally misread Independent voters when opposing Issue’s 1 and 2? Or is it possible that with the right messaging Democrats  can still win a statewide election with Independent’s supporting them?
Ohio ranks near the top of states for school voucher spending Ohio is among only 14 states that use voucher programs to provide students and parents money to attend private schools. Before this year’s expansion to a universal voucher program, Ohio spent a staggering $241 per capita on vouchers. This year so far Ohio has spent an even more staggering $514 per student. And remember those are your tax dollars

Bill to ban authorities from enforcing federal gun laws could pass Ohio House within weeks Don’t feel bad if you had to read the title again because you couldn’t believe what you read the first time. It is a perfect example of how crazy the right – wing lunatics in the General Assembly have become. What they want is Ohio to become a ” Second Amendment Sanctuary State ” who refuses to put any limitation on gun ownership. Hopefully the courts will understand the basic principle that a state law cannot override a federal law.

Sweeping government report warns of ‘ daunting ‘ climate fight The report warned of  ” substantial and increasing economic costs ” across the United States that will land most heavily on the elderly, children and low – income populations. Every degree or even a tenth of a degree of warming adds to the substantial cost. but the flip side is that preventing a degree or even a tenth of a degree of warming can lower the cost.

Abortion rights advocates look to replicate Ohio success with more ballot initiatives Our great victory on November 7 means that abortion advocates have racked up seven consecutive wins and remain undefeated in statewide ballot initiatives. Up next year are initiatives in Arizona, Florida, Nevada, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, South Dakota and Nebraska. And if the Republicans continue to espouse their Neanderthal position on the issue in those states they should help keep that undefeated streak alive.

House votes to prevent a government shutdown as GOP speaker Johnson relies on Democrats for help 93 angry, frustrated, lunatic hard – right Republicans voted against it because it didn’t include the draconian budget cuts they demanded. Which is the same thing that happened to Kevin McCarthy. And how did that work out for him? But the government shutdown has only been averted until early next year and funding for Ukraine and Israel and border security was not addressed.

Moms for Liberty’s School Board Takeover Attempts Fizzled on Election Day This group of lunatics burst on the scene in 2020 during the pandemic and used mask mandates as their primary grievance. When the pandemic ended they shifted their mission to local school board races in an attempt to transform public education into a right wing evangelical utopia. They had some limited success in rural areas but were soundly defeated in most urban and suburban districts, including here in Cuyahoga County

Judge declares mistrial after jury deadlocks in trial of officer charged in Breonna Taylor case Although local and state prosecutors declined to bring charges against Breonna’s killer, the U.S. Justice Department did in the form of civil rights violation. A mistrial because of a deadlocked jury means that the case can be tried again. And the good news is that the Justice Department has indicated that they are going to do so.

Black Voters Show Signs of Slipping Away From Biden The main concern for Black voters is the economy. Wage gains have cooled dramatically for Black workers than other Americans. Party leaders are also concerned with diminished Black voter turnout and also worried that some will back Republicans, including Donald Trump. Hoping to prevent this, Democrats are pumping money into voter canvassing, education and advertising in battleground states. But will that be enough?

Minneapolis cop, disciplined over racist email. promoted to lead homicide unit You might remember that last year the Minneapolis Department of Human Rights found a pattern of discriminatory policing in the Minneapolis Police Department, Included in the investigation was a racist email titled ” Only in the Ghetto ” sent by 25 year veteran Aimee Linson. During the investigation she said ” she couldn’t remember ” sending the email. Linson is now the head of the homicide unit.

Pulitzer – winning authors of George Floyd book told not to talk about systemic racism at Tennessee event Two days before they were set to speak at a high school in Tennessee, journalists Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunippa were told they could not read from their acclaimed book ” His Name is George Floyd,” sell the book or talk about systemic racism. This was of course consistent with Tennessee state law and proof that systemic racism is alive and well in Tennessee,
Immigration

Biden campaign goes on the offensive on immigration, decrying ” scary ” Trump plans Trump’s mass deportation plan and suspension of civil liberties are indeed scary and even draconian. And of course Biden should call him out on it. But this is all campaign rhetoric and an easy mark for Biden. What you’ll notice if you read the article is that all of Biden’s top notch campaign strategists and advisors couldn’t come up with any of his own policies to highlight.

Migrants are showing up at the U.S. southern border in historic numbers. Here’s why. And it has nothing to do with the Republican claim that it is because Biden’s immigration policy is weak. It’s because of an unprecedented displacement of people around the world. Not all of the migrants assembling at the southern border are from Mexico and other Latin American countries. Many of them are from Africa, India and Ukraine.

The GOP doesn’t want you to know the true number of undocumented immigrants Is not a shock because the GOP really doesn’t want you to know the truth about anything. And you may have guessed that the statistics cited in this article show that the number of undocumented immigrants is actually going down despite the recent surge. The country’s undocumented immigrant population peaked in 2007 when George W. Bush was president and has steadily declined since then.

Texas wants the power to arrest and order migrants to leave the US. Can it do that? The short answer is no because it is a clear conflict with the federal government’s authority to regulate immigration. But how long will it take to travel through the courts and what happens if a Trump appointed lunatic judge gets the case? And how much racial profiling and wrongful arrest and deportation of immigrants here legally will occur while the law is working its way through the courts?
