Blaine Griffin makes a bet on the politics of No Is an excellent in depth profile by our friend Nick Castele at Signal Cleveland. The question is can Griffin defeat Issue 38 without blowing up his aspiration to become mayor? Griffin is following in the footsteps of his predecessor Kevin Kelley by aligning with corporate interests against any citizen initiative. And in doing so he is alienating those of us in the activist community, just as Kelley did. And how did that work out for Kelley when he ran for mayor against Bibb in 2021? Deja Vu?

Time to invest in care response that also can address racism as a public health crisis Care response has been proven to reduce fatalities at the scene of mental health crisis calls and to increase acceptance of services and resources that are available for people in crisis. CareforCLE is a coalition of organizations advocating for a care response pilot to launch in Cleveland by the end of 2024. CCPC is proud to be a part of the coalition. Please click the link to learn more about the program and to sign up to get involved

As Cuyahoga County seeks a new jail, it’s on the hook for millions in repairs of the current jail Despite pursuing a new jail, Cuyahoga County taxpayers are going to be on the hook for about $187 million in upgrades over the next five years. These repairs will need to be made even if the new & 750million jail is built. And this cost does not include upgrades / repairs that need to be made to Courthouse Square or the Juvenile Justice Center.

Students, alumni protest Catholic Diocese of Cleveland LGBTQ policy outside Eucharistic Revival Rally Staging the protest outside Cleveland Public Auditorium during the Eucharistic Revival and Mass was a nice touch. And not surprisingly the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland did return a call asking them to comment. Let’s hope there are more of these protest’s. CCPC did not know of this event and we would have promoted it if we did. Please let us know about another protest.

Ohio GOP Politicians Have Gone to Extraordinary Lengths to Subvert and Deceive on Issue 1 Subversion and deception is of course the Republican way of doing business in any election. But what we’ve seen the last few months is a new low even for them. Fascist Frank LaRose’s clandestine voter purge, Fran DeWine’s lies and the recent TV commercial showing a woman who claims she is pro – choice saying she is voting against Issue 1 because it goes too far are among the top lowlights. Which deceptive Issue 1 tactic or ad angers you the most?

Marijuana Legislation Would Add $260 million to Ohio’s Economy, Study Predicts And it’s not just the increased tax revenue. 3,300 new jobs would be created in the first year alone. There is also an estimated $90 million that goes back into the economy courtesy of the current marijuana users who would be paying less for legal marijuana. Imagine starting a business with a product that already has widespread positive name recognition and acceptance. Would you need to do much advertising?
Ohio commits to nearly $240 million for EdChoice voucher expansion, and more might be needed And that number is likely to grow since there are still 45,000 applications that need to be processed. Remember these are our tax dollars that are being taken out of public education funding. Here’s another take on this. You know how Republicans yell and scream anytime a progressive suggests free tuition for any student attending a public university. Isn’t EdChoice the same thing for any student attending a private K – 12 school?

Typical workers in Ohio are making less than they did in 2019 2019 is the optimal year for comparison since it was the last pre – pandemic year. Since then the median hourly wage slipped from $21.81 to $21.51 an hour. And of course that discrepancy is even more glaring when you factor in the high inflation since the pandemic. A main cause of the wage drop cited in the article is declining union membership and Republican anti – worker policies.

Biden faces mounting anger from progressives over Israel – Hamas conflict The wedge between the two wings of the party, which further divided both sides last month, has the potential to impact the election as Biden looks to unify Arab Americans, Muslims, and progressive young voters, all of whom have previously supported him. So far Israelis have killed about 10,000 people in Gaza, most of them women and children. And this division is likely to get worse as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza grows. Are you one of the angry progressives?

Primary Battles Brew over Progressive Democrats’ Stance on Israel Is a very sad article. It seems that the powerful Jewish lobbying group AIPAC is going to provide complete financial support for anyone who challenges a Democrat who does not give blanket support for Israel. Most at risk are the nine House Democrats who voted against a resolution ” standing with Israel as it defends itself against the barbaric war launched by Hamas and other terrorists.” If you are one of the angry progressives, does this also anger you?

Is the pendulum of power surging toward US unions? The UAW agreement is a very big deal, a 25% pay raise over four years, cost – of – living increases and the right to strike over plant closing make it almost a model contract. And don’t forget the new UPS contract with the Teamsters and the Hollywood actors agreement. The next step though is to translate these great union victories into expansion of the union movement.

The politics of Biden’s vast new AI order The politics of AI are getting messy for Democrats. So being the consummate politician that he is, Biden’s executive order offers something for everyone. Of course if Republicans get this to the Supreme they may look at the same reasoning they used to gut environmental protection regulations. Since the Founding Fathers never mentioned AI in the constitution, Biden has no constitutional right to regulate it.
Black Lives Matter

Solidarity Between BLM and Palestine Has Deep Roots In 1964 Malcolm X advocated for the right of Arab refugees to return to their Palestinian homeland. And more recently in 2020 Palestinian flags were common sights at the George Floyd protests and multiple murals of George Floyd appeared in Gaza and the West Bank. The connection of course is oppressed People of Color wanting to live free of violence from their white oppressors.

On Race, Mike Johnson Says His Views Were Shaped by Raising a Black Child The new House speaker often talks about race in connection with a Black teenager he supposedly took custody of and raised 24 years ago. There is no mention of the man, who is now an adult on Johnson’s official website. And he does not appear in any family photos that are in his office. The Congressional Black Caucus, all of whom opposed him in the speaker vote, described him as a ” Trump – backed extremist.”

Breonna Taylor’s killing reverberates in Kentucky governor’s race Kentucky activists are still seeking justice for Taylor, the 26 year old Black woman who was fatally shot by police executing a no – knock raid on her apartment. That quest is activating Black voters who may not have been otherwise interested in the governor’s race. The reason is that the Republican candidate, Attorney General Daniel Cameroon decided not to indict any of Breonna’s killers
Immigration

Tensions rise between new and established migrants The frustration, centered in big cities, is twofold. Many undocumented and mixed – status families feel overlooked as new arrivals become eligible for work permits, and in many communities of color, spending on shelter for asylum – seekers is viewed in contrast to scarcity in other social programs. The obvious solution of course is federal funding so that scarcity of resources is no longer a problem.

Bipartisan legislation seeks to create children’s immigration courts. Immigration courts currently have no protocols to process children which means protection is up to the discretion of the judge. The proposed legislation would establish  separate children’s courts within the Executive Office for Immigration and Review and provide protections and protocols. The new court would also help alleviate the backlog of cases in existing immigration courts. It seems like it will pass the Senate. Let’s hope when it gets to the House that they have a moment of sanity and pass it as well.

Trump eyes radical immigration shift if elected in 2024 promising mass deportations and ideological screenings You can tell by the title that this article reads like a horror story. The deportations would supersede existing asylum immigration hearings and simply turn everyone away at the U.S. Mexico border. The ideological test, also illegal, would turn away anyone who has ” Marxist ” or communist leanings. This is of course all campaign red meat to his racist, xenophobic base. But still, let’s hope this horror story remains fiction and doesn’t become non – fiction.

Immigrant, refugee, asylum seeker: What are the differences between these terms? An immigrant is any foreign – born person who has migrated to and now lives in the United States. A refugee is a person who left their home and is seeking refuge in another country because they cannot remain in their own country. An asylum seeker is a refugee who is seeking to remain in the United States legally so that they can escape persecution in their own country. A person can request refugee status from outside the United States, but an asylum seeker can only seek asylum when they are in the United States.
