Cleveland City Councilman Kris Harsh Will Debate Will Debate Participatory Budgeting Advocates Before November Election Things are getting very contentious between the PB advocates and Cleveland City Council. If it is structured properly the debate will give Cleveland voters an opportunity to sort things out. The debate is set for Tuesday, September 26 at 6 pm at Public Hall’s Little Theater. And please check out the September 12 CCPC People’s Budget ( PB CLE ) Meeting described below.

The Cavs have already spent $82 million of the $92 million allocated to them from the Sin Tax through 2034. So where is the other $14 million coming from? And what happens when other renovations are needed before 2034? By the way, Dan Gilbert’s net worth is $18.2 billion.
Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb campaign spends big on consultants Through the end of July Bibb had raised $131,000 in 2023, which is not unusual for the mayor of Cleveland. What is unusual is that $80,000 was spent on polling and consultants. The question is why so much when re – election is still two years away?

6 months after the East Palestine train disaster, CWRU embarks on study of health effects of residents The study will follow participants for five years and assess how toxic chemical exposures may impact local risks of developing cancer and other metabolic diseases as a result of DNA damage. The East Palestine community is welcoming the study. Let’s hope that the results are good for the participants.
State

Local, National Groups Praise Issue 1 Defeat, Buckle Up for November Fight The sentiment on both sides is that this battle is over and now it’s time for the war. And we as progressives will be ready for the war. Something comforting to think about is that almost everyone who voted no on Issue 1 will vote for the abortion access constitutional amendment in November.

The top two lol’s in the article are 1) They didn’t have enough time to campaign. Remember it was the Republicans who decided to rush it through and place it on the ballot in August. 2) No on Issue 1 ads were deceptive. Did you see any of the yes ads that plastered the airways during the final week of the campaign?.You’ll have more laughs if you click the link and read the entire article.

In First Energy class action Ohioans got $16 as lawyers make millions The $49 million judgement was paid out to two million Ohio First Energy customers. The attorneys who brought the case earned $13.3 million. And they could have made even more if the judge hadn’t capped their hourly rate at $600.

HB 6 provisions are still alive thanks to the General Assembly’s heads – we – win, tails – you lose attitude Parts of HB 6 have yet to be repealed because the biggest allies General Assembly members have, other than their donors, are voters suffering with amnesia about the legislature’s antics. And as their atrocities get worse and worse so does the amnesia.about previous unresolved atrocities.

National

A showdown over Trump’s trial date reflects an irreconcilable clash between politics and justice Special Counsel Jack Smith has proposed a January 2 start date for the trial which is two weeks before the Iowa Caucus. The likely scenario is the primary season being overlaid with what some have called the most important trial in American history. And don’t forget that several other trials involving Trump will be occurring at the same time.

The real reason conservatives are scared to death of ‘ Barbie.’ If you’ve seen the movie you know that there is a lot going on that hovers beneath the surface. If you read this article you’ll see the parallels with the Republicans goal of creating a male dominated United States. If you haven’t seen the movie this article might convince you to check it out.

America’s white majority is aging out Another reason conservatives are scared to death. The projection is that around 2045 white people will make up less than half of the population. Imagine the great diversity with no single racial group being able to claim a majority. Wonder what the Republican Party will look like in 2045?

Historic heat waves show how climate change hits people the hardest The homeless are especially hard hit because of urban ” heat islands.” Buildings, concrete structures, paved parking lots and other structures absorb and retain heat. Low – income neighborhoods and communities of color are also more likely to become heat islands because they have fewer parks, yards and street trees.

Black Lives Matter

Instead he spoke at length about his growth as a christian during his 340 days behind bars. In rambling remarks, full of biblical references, he drew parallels with his ” suffering ” and the false accusations endured by Job and Jesus in the bible. LOL!
These 4.6 million US citizens are barred from voting. A new court decision could help change that Eleven states, mostly in the south, still have permanent disenfranchisement laws affecting anyone who is convicted of a felony. And those affected are disproportionately people of color. Last week the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals found Mississippi’s law to be unconstitutional. Let’s hope this precedent applies to the other ten states as well.

Christopher Columbus Says Slavery was ‘ Better Than Getting Killed ‘ in New Videos Approved for Florida Students Florida has approved using controversial animated videos created by an unaccredited right – wing group as supplemental teaching materials. The videos also show Frederick Douglass defending slavery to students and depictions of BLM protestors as being members of Mexican drug cartels. WTF!

When Confederate – glorifying  monuments went up in the south, voting in Black areas went down  There is also a very clear line that researchers have established from the monuments to modern racism and the attempt at re – establishing Jim Crow Laws in the south. Which is why every single one of them should be torn down.

Immigration

Two Years After the Chaotic Mass Evacuations of Afghanistan, Asylees in Cleveland Are Still in Legal Limbo With humanitarian parole set to expire this month for hundreds of Afghan refugees living in Cleveland, a lack of action by Congress and Biden leaves their immigration status up in the air. Are they going to be sent back to Afghanistan to their deaths?

Biden vowed to reform immigration detention. Instead, private prisons benefitted More than 90% of the roughly 31,000 people being held by ICE on average in July were in private prisons. Since Biden has been president only one has been closed. Candidate Biden said in 2020 ” No business should profit from desperate people fleeing violence.”

ER doctor: I see the cruelty of US immigration policy up close El Paso recently experienced 40 consecutive days of 100 – plus degree heat. Many migrants, if found alive, end up in the emergency room unconscious and clinging to life. Texas governor Greg Abbott’s cruel escalation of border deterrence has made the dangerous situation even worse

Massachusetts governor declares emergency and urges help for migrants Help from the federal government is needed because shelters housing migrants and refugees are beyond capacity. The reason for the overflow is the migrants being flown or bussed in from Texas and Florida

CCPC People’s Budget ( PB CLE ) Meeting Tuesday, September 12 from 6:30 to 8 pm. The People’s Budget is a charter amendment on the ballot in Cleveland this November. It would give Cleveland residents over the age of 13 the ability to directly decide how 2% of the budget (about $14 million this year) is spent on projects in the neighborhoods. How is public input from the neighborhoods going to be organized? Who’s going to decide which projects get included in this part of the budget? And will other parts of the budget be affected by what PB decides? Is this a good idea? If you want these questions answered or have other questions about the charter amendment please attend this meeting with PB CLE representatives. Please click here to register for the event and to submit a question After registering you’ll receive an email with the Zoom link.
