Cuyahoga County pays off 1990’s bonds for Cavs, Guardians facilities, but still carries $1 billion in debt – and it could double It is important to remember that all of the public sector financing for stadium projects are bonds which take decades to pay off while accumulating large amounts of interest. The county still owes $140 million on the Q deal and $190.9 million on the Guardians renovations. And soon the Browns will be knocking at the door.
Greater Cleveland: poverty amid plenty Describes how labor, housing and jobs are kept at distance from those who need it the most in the impoverished areas of Cleveland. Greater Cleveland has 10.000 unfilled manufacturing jobs but people in Cleveland who could fill the positions can’t get there because of poor public transportation.
Cuyahoga County Passes Anti – Wage Theft Legislation Cuyahoga County will no longer do business with companies determined to have stolen from employees. A special thanks to our friends from Guardians for Fair Work who did the lobbying to make this happen. A special thanks also to those of you who attended the County Council meetings in support of the issue.
The city is looking into developing a new model which would give residents more response options in mental health emergencies. A special thanks to our friends at Policy Matters Ohio and REACH ( Responding with Empathy, Access and Community Healing ) for leading the effort to make this happen!
Cleveland Wants to Become a 15 – minute City. What Does That Mean? And How Does It Plan on Getting There? It means that no matter where you live in the city you should be able to access all of your basic needs with a 15 minute walk, bike ride or transit trip. What’s needed to make this happen is a change to zoning laws and incentives for transit development
State
Opponents to constitutional change sue state over State Issue 1 ballot language This lawsuit is different from the one about the legality of the August special election. The issue here is that the ballot language summary which voters will see on the ballot is misleading and full of omissions. Which it is. Unfortunately it will be decided by the Ohio Supreme Court.
How August vote on Ohio’s Issue 1 is affecting the campaign for abortion access amendment this fall Reinforces what we said above. Anyone who is signing the abortion access petition is almost a certain no vote on August 8. That is if they know about the special election. If you are circulating a petition please make sure you educate every signer about August 8. And hopefully we’ll have about 800.000 certain no votes who show up to vote on August 8.
Ohio Republicans attack on higher education will devastate our widely respected colleges and universities And do the Republicans care? Probably not. In fact the trip down the Florida rabbit hole is designed to destroy higher education. Republican leaders know that a highly educated population with critical thinking skills could never support their agenda Remember Trump’s comment in 2016 ” I love the undereducated “
Republican lawmakers want to stop Ohio cities from regulating businesses to curb gun violence At issue here is a Columbus ordinance requiring bars and restaurants to close early in areas where there is a lot of gun violence. The republicans of course want to pre – empt any and all local control that interfere with their agenda.
Bill to create universal health care coverage in Ohio re – introduced in House About 740,000 Ohioans are currently uninsured. And for those who are insured premiums and deductibles can be very expensive. A special thanks to State Representative and CCPC member Mike Skindell for being one of the bill’s co-sponsors.
National
McCarthy and Biden reach agreement in principle on debt limit But will it pass? Progressives are angry about the work requirement. And the right – wing lunatics are angry that it doesn’t go far enough. Are there enough moderates on both sides to get it passed? One thing is certain – if it doesn’t pass and the economy crashes the Republicans will blame Biden. The vote is expected tomorrow.
Why Democratic Candidates Should Challenge Biden The conventional wisdom is that a strong primary challenge could damage Biden for the general election. But with a 37% approval rating, isn’t Biden already damaged? A strong primary challenge would either show that Biden is strong enough to handle the general election, or if the challenger wins that that person is and Biden isn’t.
Not Every Pandemic Needs Someone To Blame Which is true. No one, not even China, wanted the pandemic to happen. And if China did accidently release COVID from a lab, ask yourself this question – would the United States admit it if they had done it? If there is any blame it should be placed on the Republicans who downplayed it and likely caused thousands of death’s to mostly people of their party who believed them.
Most medical students surveyed say they won’t practice in states with abortion bans This shouldn’t be a surprise. The result is likely a further strain on health care in red states. And if you are a college student, a young woman starting a career or are seeking a place to start a family, are you going to a red state? What will happen to Ohio if the abortion access constitutional amendment is unsuccessful?
The EPA has a plan to eliminate climate pollution from power plants, but will it survive in court? The proposal is great news. It would require a 90% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2040. Unfortunately the Supreme Court has frequently sided with opponents of any EPA authority. And that’s where this is headed
Black Lives Matter
‘ Change is coming ‘ Akron demonstrators want Justice Department to investigate officers who killed Jayland Walker Hundreds of people, including activists from across the country, marched through downtown Akron last week to share a list of demands calling for Justice for Jayden. A special thanks to those of you that were there.
Cleveland to expand ShotSpotter to all five police districts This is not good news. Research has suggested that ShotSpotter has not been proven to reduce serious violent crime, and that it increases the number of high intensity interactions between police and civilians. And we all know what that could mean if the civilian happens to be a Black person.
‘ Torture chamber ‘ LaShawn Thompson family autopsy finds jail death a homicide due to severe neglect The first autopsy performed performed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner found that the cause of death was ‘ undetermined.’ A second autopsy, paid for by Colin Kaepernick, found that he was ” eaten alive ” by bed bugs and insects. What do you think?
The advisory says ” Before travelling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color.” Fascist DeSantis was outraged, but what did he expect? And is Ohio next?
A Battle Over Hate Speech at the University of Wisconsin A UW student made a video with some very vile and racist comments with her friends laughing in the background. The university cited ” free speech ” in their failure to discipline her. But what about the UW Black students and others who are deeply offended by the video?
Immigration
The Other Americans: Title 42 Leaves a Scar on the U.S. Asylum System The Biden administration has replaced the draconian Trump – era policies with even tougher requirements for asylum seekers. And almost worse is the increased deportations from the U.S. of people who have already successfully integrated into our society.
Biden leaning into global diplomacy to manage migration at US – Mexico border Biden believes that his decades of foreign policy experience will help him convince Latin American countries to limit the number of people that want to leave. The problem is that if those counties wanted to make conditions better so that people didn’t want to leave they would already be doing it.
More than a quarter of DACA recipients are uninsured as they await the fate of health care rule If a DACA recipient loses their job they are currently not able to apply for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The Biden administration is trying to change this through the Department of Health and Human Services. DACA recipients contribute around $6.2 billion annually in federal taxes that help fund the ACA.
National boycott planned against Florida immigration laws A movement for a national labor strike by immigrants on June 1 is gaining traction as it seems to be exploding on social media. Hope this actually happens. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, immigrants pay more than $90 billion in taxes each year..
Anti – immigration hoax exposed and a Republican actually admits it The claim was that homeless veterans who were staying in hotels were kicked out so that migrants could stay there. It was totally fabricated but Fox News and all of the other major conservative media outlets reported the story as factual without even bothering to check the source.
