The public cost of Cleveland Browns stadium: hundreds of millions of dollars Is about $350 million since the stadium opened in 1998 and this does not include public sector dollars that went into construction of the stadium, which is still being paid off. The team contributes $250,000 in annual rent payments. In case you’re wondering, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam’s net worth is about $4.8 billion.
Cavs want another $28 million in Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse upgrades, which would require new public funding As usual the Sin Tax doesn’t seem to be generating enough revenue for ” necessary upgrades. ” So of course more of our tax dollars are needed. In case you’re wondering, Cavs owner Dan Gilbert’s net worth is about $18.2 billion
Displaced: A family forced out of Cleveland rental home by lead hazards finds little support It has been over a year since Sariyah Wheeler was first poisoned by lead paint in the Collinwood rental unit. The landlord has refused to deal with the problem and a long court battle is beginning. And the Wheeler family continues to struggle with finding a safe place to live.
Cleveland City Council passes $10 million for West Side Market, concluding weeks of debate What’s significant here is that Mayor Bibb asked for $20 million to be spent on the market and didn’t get it. Will be interesting to see how future requests from the mayor are dealt with by the city council. Is a rift developing?
Cleveland proposes 12 weeks paid family leave for city workers Great news! Under the legislation, new parents who work for the city would receive full pay and benefits while taking time off following the birth or adoption of a child. Employees would also be entitled 20 hours of leave for prenatal or pre – adoption appointments

Ohio Senate Passes Massive Higher Education Overhaul Bill, House Hearing Opponent Testimony Senate Bill 83 is better known as the ” Higher Education Destruction Bill ” and is a large part of the Republican goal of achieving a fascist takeover of Ohio’s public education system. If this angers you please click here to get Weekly Action Alerts from our friends at Honesty for Ohio Education
Ballot language set for Ohio 60% constitutional amendment question. Now named State Issue 1 The good news is that they didn’t attempt some language trickery by making it vote yes to reject the anti – democratic legislation. The bad news is that they didn’t describe that the principle of majority rule which has been in place for over a century for constitutional amendments is being repealed
Their main problem is securing polling locations. Only a few months ago the Republicans banned all August elections so many locations are already booked for other events. Wouldn’t it be nice if the election officials determined that it was impossible to hold the election on such short notice.
Abortion clinics in Ohio are still serving patients, and in some cases are as busy as ever, according to administrators. Let’s hope this continues indefinitely.

Conservative appeals judges tear into the Biden administration defense of anti – abortion drug approval The US 5th Circuit Court of Appeals is one of the most conservative courts in the country and they appear to be sympathetic to the junk science arguments that caused the lunatic Texas judge to ban Mifepristone. This despite the fact that the FDA approved the drug over 20 years ago and millions of women have used it safely since then
Progressives Warn Joe Biden Over Debt Limit Concessions What Say it Ain’t So Joe appears to be putting on the table is massive cuts in programs that benefit low – income Americans. Simply talking about it gives credence to the right – wing war on poor people. Doing it would be horrible.
Red States Are Now Weakening Child Labor Laws While Defunding Public Schools It’s no coincidence that advocates for loosening child labor restrictions also push for expanding charter schools and voucher programs. The ultimate goal seems to be an uneducated population with kids working in factories like they were in the mid 1800’s.
The demographic makeup of the country’s voters continues to shift, That creates headwinds for Republicans White voters without a four – year college degree, the indispensable core of the modern Republican Party, continues to decline as a share of actual and eligible voters. Meanwhile those with at least a four – year college degree are expanding their influence.
What other countries say about gun violence in the US There have been about 200 mass shootings in the US this year. Which is almost 2 every day. New Zealand, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Venezuela and Uruguay have all issued travel advisories about traveling here because of the danger
Black Lives Matter
Rats, Dirty Air, Broken Faucets: Lakeview Terrace Residents Wonder When Help Will Come Built in 1937, Lakeview Terrace is the oldest public housing complex in the United States. Activists have been describing the problem’s and sounding the alarm since the 1980’s. But the same problem still exists day after day for the people forced to live there.
Ohio House lawmakers proposing extremist right – wing social studies curriculum This is very similar to the curriculum overhaul initiated by Fascist DeSantis in Florida. Meaning it would also ban the teaching of the horrors of slavery and the entire Civil Rights Movement.
In an open letter to Congress, NAACP President Derrick Johnson urged debt ceiling negotiators to reject spending caps and work requirements in federal aid programs. Which is exactly what Biden seems to be negotiating with Kevin McCarthy
Black taxpayers are audited at higher rates than others, IRS admits And it’s not a small discrepancy. Black taxpayers are 3 to 5 times more likely to get audited than white taxpayers. How can this be when it is a computerized model that is supposed to randomly select who gets audited? Is there actually some racial bias that is programmed into the model?
US Supreme Court takes up bid to revive South Carolina voting map deemed racially biased This is unfortunate. An appeals court has already ruled that the gerrymandered districts reflect racial bias. And it is obvious by looking at the maps. Why then is the Supreme Court even hearing this case?
Immigration
Supreme Court ends dispute over Trump – era asylum – seeker policy Not a surprise that Republican lawmakers wanted to keep Title 42 in place. It is a surprise that the Supreme Court ruled against them. But we still have to worry about legislation that Sherrod Brown and other Democrats are supporting that would put it back in place.
Immigration policy after Title 42 is full of uncertainty So far there has been no immediate rush to the border as had been predicted after Title 42 expired on May 11 but that doesn’t mean one isn’t coming. Biden has to figure out policy as he seeks re – election with increasing pressure from opposite directions from progressives and right wing Republicans.
Nonexistent ‘ border surge ‘ scrambles immigration politics The number of border encounters actually fell by 50 percent in the first few days after Title 42 was lifted. Republicans are really sad because they were of course hoping to blame Biden for a massive surge.
8 – year – old girl dies in U.S. Border Patrol custody in Texas All that is being said is that she died after suffering a ” medical emergency.” The Office of Professional Responsibility will be conducting an investigation which is standard protocol. Very sad.
Texas, Florida laws have Latinos rethinking where they live The legislation causing the rethinking is of course the draconian laws passed in both states dealing with undocumented immigrants. Last week videos of empty workplaces in Florida went viral after Fascist DeSantis signed a bill that ratchets up sanctions against undocumented workers.
