‘ We can do hard things: ‘ Mayor Justin Bibb lays out ambitious next steps in second State of the City speech Which of course all sounded wonderful as do all State of the City speeches. Questions from the audience had to be submitted ahead of time for approval and most likely so that Bibb could craft carefully worded responses.
Cleveland proposes North Coast Development Authority with power to realize big Lakefront dreams This has been talked about for decades but now seems to be happening. The goal of this group is to raise hundreds of millions of dollars from private capital and government grants. What’s unclear though is how many taxpayer dollars will go into the development.
Ohio Lawmakers seek $62 million for Cleveland ‘ land bridge ‘ connecting downtown to the lakefront Which is obviously connected to the above article and means that some huge lakefront development is going to occur. If you click the link you’ll see how cool it’s going to look and how it leads directly to the Browns stadium. But could the $62 million be better used to help poor people?
Bibb, Ronayne Gift – Packaging Riches to Haslem Is legendary Cleveland journalist Roldo Bartimole’s take on the above two article’s in what he says is his final commentary. This is a must read.

Ohio GOP’s 60% voter approval for amendments plan and August election to vote on it move closer Sadly this seems like a done deal. It has already passed the Senate and it’s past the committee process in the House. Of course the fascist hypocrites are fine with the August election to approve the 60% threshold being at the 50% level.
Majority of GOP Lawmakers Want to Make it Harder to Amend the Ohio Constitution. Far Fewer Think The Public Actually Wants That Which is not a surprise. What might be the real Republican goal of the August special election to raise the standard for voters to approve a constitutional amendment to 60%? Maybe it’s to force the abortion access coalition to use resources needed in November to make sure it’s defeated.
Norfolk Southern is ready to reopen the section of tracks in East Palestine two months after derailment They are claiming that the contaminated soil underneath the tracks has been removed and replaced by new soil and it’s time to resume business as usual. Do you think it’s back to business as usual for the residents of East Palestine?
$15 minimum wage backers can gather signatures for proposed constitutional amendment Congratulations to our friends at the One Fair Wage campaign for clearing the Ballot Board part of the process to begin gathering signatures. The goal is to get it on the ballot in 2024.

Supreme Court says abortion pill mifepristone will remain broadly available during court battle. This is good news short term but not necessarily good news long term because it means a court battle will occur. The case will now be heard in the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Oral arguments begin May 17
In recent weeks numerous emergency meetings – focused on abortion – related messaging and the potential for compromises – have been held by conservatives in nonprofit organizations, on Capitol Hill and in elite Republican and evangelical circles. Anybody feel sorry for them?
MAGA Republicans are destroying our public schools. Teachers and parents must fight back Is an excellent op – ed by AFT president Randi Weingarten. In it she details how teachers need more people to speak up to counter the Republicans fascist education agenda. And of course to pay attention to school board races.
The good news is that this is one of the largest defamation settlements ever and that testimony in the trial confirmed what those old bumper stickers said ” Fox News Lies. ” The bad news is that the Trump supporting lunatic’s who watch and believe Fox News probably won’t know or care.
Black Lives Matter
Akron police sprayed tear gas at protesters, yet ‘ unclear ‘ of sequence of events The city could not provide any evidence that the crowd provoked the police officers to justify the use of tear gas. Maybe the evidence the police were using to justify the tear gassing was that many in the crowd were Black people
Jayland suffered through a series of tragedies that began with the death of his fiancee and ended when the still unnamed Akron police officers fired 96 bullets into his body last year. Black Lives do Matter.
Ralph Yarl was shot because he accidentally rang the wrong doorbell in Kansas City. If the shooter was really ‘ scared to death ‘ it was because of his racist assumption that a Black person would be seeking to harm him. Do you think he would have shot a white person who rang his doorbell?
Racist threats have been ‘ pouring into ‘ Manhattan DA Bragg’s office since Trump’s arraignment Of course it is typical of Trump to personally attack a prosecutor when he’s accused of crime. But what makes this time much worse are racial overtones and the reaction of Trump’s followers.
Trying to Erase Black History Won’t Work School districts across the country are working on integrating Black Studies concepts across curriculums without walling off classes to select students or inflaming political controversies.
Immigration
Title 42: Agents prepare for migrant surge as deadline looms Title 42, the Trump – era policy that allows border officials to turn away migrants at the southern border has been used 2.9 million times since it was enacted during the pandemic in 2020. Thankfully it is going to expire May 11 when the national COVID emergency expires
GOP immigration bill sketches battle lines for 2024 The 130 page bill is packed with Trump – era immigration proposals including severe restrictions on those seeking asylum. There is no chance that this horrible bill could pass now. But in it are the likely Republican immigration talking points for 2024
Texas Republicans back bill allowing vigilante policing of immigrants The Texas bill would allow the governor to deputize citizens as immigration officers – and in some cases grant them arrest powers. Vigilante Texans sounds like a nightmare in whatever context it is used.
Mexico feels the strain as Haitian Migrants caught in limbo, mark time About 50,000 Haitians seeking Asylum have become stranded in Mexico because of tougher standards being imposed to get into the United States. Many are now pursuing asylum status to remain in Mexico
