It’s more than derailments, crumbling Norfolk Southern bridges need attention too This is in the local section because when you click the link you’ll see a photo of the crumbling Lake Avenue Bridge, which stands between the Cudell neighborhood and Edgewater Park. Nearby residents have been trying for years to get Norfolk Southern to fix it.
Advocates Oppose Cleveland Port Authority’s Possible Repeal of Prevailing Wage Mandate A port resolution has required prevailing wages and a $15 minimum wage for service sector contracts since 2018. Repeal is now being considered because a consultant said the policy is keeping bond financing deals away. CCPC is proud to be a part of the coalition opposing the repeal.
Cuyahoga County Pausing Talks on Pay to Stay Legislation Due to State Law that Might Preempt Action Ohio is one of only five states where a tenant can be evicted if the rent is a day late or a dollar short. And Republicans want to keep it that way by preventing local ordinances. A continuation of their long tradition of passing preemption laws to thwart any local legislation that might help poor people.

Last August the Republican Party of Hypocrisy passed a law banning August special elections because turnout is usually low and the cost is high. And now a sudden exception! Best LOL in the article – the claim by the bill’s sponsors that this has nothing to do with the abortion rights amendment.
Ohio’s Education Culture War Many educators are navigating the raging culture war within their classrooms that often interferes with their ability to teach. The lightning rod topics are largely focused around how LGBTQ students and students of color are treated in schools and represented in the curriculum.
Coal bailouts: After Larry Householder corruption conviction, Dems renew push to repeal HB 6 subsidies As the Householder trial and verdict clearly showed, HB 6 was passed by illegal means. But the estimated $700 million coal bailout paid by Ohio electric customers statewide remains. The effort to repeal the subsidies stalled after Householder’s arrest but maybe now it can get done.
Drilling in state parks: Republicans hope it can fuel a tax cut, but environmentalists fear the worst In no way, shape or form would the drilling leases in state parks make up for the billion dollars in tax revenue lost if the HB 1 flat = tax scam passes. State parks are supposed to be relatively pollution free. Imagine drilling next to a campsite or hiking trail.
Republicans prepare for battle to unseat Sherrod Brown The race is expected to be one of the nastiest and most expensive in the country next year. The speculative Republican line-up so far includes State Senator Matt Dolan, Trump stooge Bernie Moreno and Secretary of State Fascist Frank LaRose with more to come. Let’s hope they destroy each other in the primary

The Curtain Rises on Trump’s Legal Dramas The Stormy Daniels case is the least significant of his legal problems. His role in the January 6 insurrection, the attempt to commit election fraud in Georgia and the theft of classified documents are all yet to come. Wouldn’t it be great if Trump had to fight all four of them this year and next.
U.S. banks want socialism for themselves and capitalism for everybody else Wouldn’t it be great if you knew that no matter how foolish you were with your finances, the federal government would not only bail you out but also subsidize you to start over again. If you are a too – big – to – fail bank you can be bailed out and subsidized to start over and over again repeatedly.

The False Promise of Trickle – Down Urbanism More evidence that high cost gentrification projects, including new sports stadiums, do not bring in added revenue to pay for the cost of the project. Each consumer has an amount of money that they will spend on entertainment. And they will spend it no matter what the entertainment is available to them,

ShotSpotter to be live in Cleveland’s fifth district in April Shotspotter does not definitively identify a shot. It identifies the location where there has been the sound of a shot, which may or may not have actually been a shot. The ” 137 ” shots incident in 2012 began when police officers heard a car backfiring and assumed it was gunshots.
Have Clevelanders Lost Interest in Police Reform Suggests that as the Cleveland Police Department enters its eighth year under federal oversight that “consent decree fatigue” may have set in. Resident participation has been low in recent weeks as the city held public hearings to choose a new police monitoring team.
Cuyahoga County bail reform in the shadow of Issue 1 Ohioans last year approved Issue 1, the statewide ballot measure requiring judges to consider public safety before setting bail amounts. The average county jail stay is about 30 days, but for those who cannot make bail, and stay until trial, the average is 104 days. Why the discrepancy?
Reducing Jail Populations Does Not Cause an Uptick in Violent Crime Researchers say they’ve debunked speculation that criminal justice reform fuels rising crime rates as the Republicans would like you to believe. It is extremely rare for a person released to get rebooked for a violent crime.

Top Democrats warn Biden: Don’t restart family detentions Most of the opposition is from the progressive wing of the party, but notably does include Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer. The obvious cruelty of the policy is a factor for those who oppose it. But so is the possibility of dividing the party as we head into 2024.
Canada sees record population growth in 2022 from immigration Over one million, the most population increase in Canada’s history. And most of them immigrants that the Canadian government welcomed to ease labor shortages, Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a country without xenophobic politicians
America needs immigration reform, or it risks losing an entire generation of tech workers to countries like Canada, the UK and Japan Many qualified engineers and tech workers are here on work visas. When they discover that applications for permanent residency, the “green card ” can take as long as a decade, they leave. Long term, America won’t be able to compete with the countries they are going to.
With Congress stuck, some immigrant advocates go local With Congress unable to do anything, advocates are pushing local legislatures to give undocumented people access to a drivers licence, in – stabte college tuition and other services. Unfortunately this is not working out to well in Republican controlled states.
Supreme Court takes up First Amendment immigration case Does a that makes it illegal to knowingly ” encourage or induce ” someone to enter the U.S. illegally violate the First Amendment?
