State lawmakers support some stadium funding A new multi – purpose domed stadium sought by the Cleveland Browns in Brook Park appears to be growing legs thanks to a willingness by state lawmakers to fund a significant portion of the stadium’s construction costs. The biggest question at this time is how much state funding may be forthcoming and will it make a big enough dent in the public sector side of the equation.
Cleveland is nearing a decision on whether to close Burke Lakefront Airport You may recall that during the 2021 mayoral campaign, Justin Bibb said he favored closing the airport. It now seems like City Hall is close to doing it as two studies measuring the impact of closing the airport have been completed. But it won’t be easy. City Council will have its say as will the Federal Aviation Administration and The Army Corps of Engineers. And of course the corporate business leaders who use it for travel must be considered.
Cleveland Okays $2 Million to Try and End Unsheltered Homelessness by 2025 Whether encamped on the northern edge of Superior Ave. downtown, or under a highway overpass, roughly 150 Clevelanders spend a great chunk of their days and nights outside, either refusing to seek shelter or mentally unprepared for communal living. The ‘ House for Every Neighbor ‘ program aims to rapidly rehouse these people by the end of December.
Solar panel summer planned in Cleveland and Akron Some rare good news in this section and it’s always good to promote clean energy initiatives. The goal of the summertime effort is to make people in Cleveland and Akron aware of the solar panel tax credits available through the Inflation Reduction Act. Staff from the two cities will be doing the work alongside the nonprofits Solar United Neighbors and Power a Clean Future Ohio.

After years of plenty, Ohio lawmakers anticipate ‘ tighter ‘ state spending ahead Overall, state tax revenue has fallen short of expectations four of the last six months according to preliminary data the state’s Office of Management and Budget released last week. The main reason that tax revenue has fallen short of expectations so often recently is because the state has taken in $487 million less than expected state income tax revenue between July of 2023 and the end of last month.
Ohio spent nearly $1B on private school vouchers. Who did they benefit? Do you think there might be any correlation between the article above and this one? The staggering total from last school year was $993.7 million. The lunatic Republicans sold the universal voucher program by saying it would give more families access to a private school education. But the vast majority of the billion dollars went to families whose kids were already enrolled in private schools. And those are families who already could afford to send their kids to private schools
Abortion advocacy group rebrands itself months after voters approve reproductive rights amendment The abortion rights group Pro – Choice Ohio has changed its name for the second time in a decade. The new name of the organization is Abortion Forward. Executive Director Kellie Copeland said the group will continue to work to repeal the over 30 restrictions to abortion access that the General Assembly has passed since 2011. We wish Abortion Forward good luck with their efforts.
Applications coming in for Ohio medical marijuana shops that want to sell recreational pot Medical marijuana dispensaries in Ohio that want to sell to recreational users can now apply for dual licenses. License applications will be reviewed in the order they are received and will be awarded by September 7. The process is different for brand – new businesses that want to sell legal marijuana products. Those businesses have to pay a non – refundable $5,000 fee and had to submit applications by June 14

Supreme Court upholds access to mifepristone abortion pill in a unanimous decision Some rare good news from SCOTUS . The ruling last week said that a goup of conservative anti – abortion doctors does not have any legal basis to challenge access to mifepristone, one of the two common drugs used in medication abortion. Unfortunately on the rare occasions when SCOTUS has done the right thing, it is usually followed by a travesty and we have a couple of more weeks in June when decisions are going to be released. Fingers crossed.
Beyond a reasonable doubt: Trump’s criminal conviction matters politically Argues that the master of branding has just branded himself a criminal. Short memorable labels recalled or repeated can often have an impact because they are ” sticky.” ” Convicted felon ” packs a mighty punch in our society – at least one equal, one would think, to Trump’s all – time winners like ” Crooked Hillary ” and ” fake news.” And maybe the impact will be even more powerful since it is based on fact.
Democrats launch effort to counter conservatives’ sweeping Project 2025 Launched two years ago by the Heritage Foundation, Project 2025 aims to disassemble the federal government and replace it with a smaller, more nimble version. And of course it would be stocked with right – wing Trump loyalists. The project arose as part of the conservative outcry that ” deep state ” bureaucrats across federal agencies had acted to stymie Trump’s agenda in his first term, including his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Progressive tensions burst out into the open amid Jones – Bowman split Mondaire Jones, a former darling of the progressive movement apparently isn’t that progressive after all. In a surprise move, Jones decided to endorse Jamaal Bowen’s primary opponent citing Bowman’s position on Israel as the main reason. Jones decided to endorse challenger George Latimer who, believe it or not, is funded by AIPAC. So the title of the article is misleading since the reality is Mondaire Jones is no longer a progressive
Black Lives Matter
What to know about Juneteenth The holiday, also called Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day, is celebrated on June 19, in reference to the 1865 date in which Union troops informed the remaining slaves that they were emancipated. This was more than two years after President Lincoln legally freed the enslaved people in the states that had seceded from the Union. NAACP urges Biden to halt weapons to Israel to build Black voter support Advocates have been warning Biden that Black voters feel a sense of connection with Palestinians for the decades of oppression they have faced. NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson said ” The growing number of civilian deaths is horrifying Black Americans, particularly young Black Americans. Polls have shown that a majority of Black voters want to see an immediate ceasefire in the region.
Black leaders call out Trump criminal justice contradictions as he rails against guilty verdict Racial justice advocates are using the historic moment to remind the public that Trump and his associates attempted to overturn the will of the voters by challenging the 2020 presidential election results in heavily Black and Latino districts. The hush money trial was just one part of a broader narrative around electoral and racial justice.
US appeals court blocks grant program for Black women – owned businesses Fearless fund is a venture capital group that awards Black women who own small businesses $20.000 in grants and other resources to grow their businesses. What a great idea. Unfortunately, conservative lunatics filed a suit last year alleging that the Fearless Fund violated a 19th century federal law that bars racial bias in private contracts. And even more unfortunately a federal appeals court agreed. WTF.
Immigration
Biden Shut the Border to Asylum Seekers. The Question is Whether the Order Can Be Enforced The southern border stretching from California to Texas is about 2000 miles long. It is uncertain what number of migrants who are denied access at the border checkpoints will seek acces at other locations. But many will. What is certain is that the executive order does not come with the necessary funding to carry it out because the Republicans in Congress continue to block it.
Mayorkas defends new asylum restrictions ‘ We stand by the legality of what we have done ‘ In July 2020, Biden tweeted ” Trump is fighting both tooth and nail to deny those fleeing dangerous situations their right to seek asylum in our nation. We should uphold our moral responsibility and enforce our immigration laws with dignity, not turn away those fleeing violence, war and poverty.” Mayorkas rejected that that stance was at odds with the administration’s current policy. LOL
Border security a key topic in Ohio’s U.S. Senate race Bernie Moreno, who is an immigrant from Columbia, predictably wants to restore Trump’s immigration policies and of course believes Biden’s executive order doesn’t go far enough. Sadly, Sherrod Brown feels the same, calling Biden’s order ‘ overdue,’ but says more needs to be done. Brown also claims that he has been pushing the administration to do something for a long time. Which is rhetoric all designed to show that he is moving to the right to get reelected.
” Clear Shift ” Toward the Far Right: Anti – Immigrant Nationalists Gain Ground Across Europe Residents of all 27 countries In the European Union went to the polls last week to vote for the European Parliament, which resulted in a surge of support for right – wing parties across most of the continent while many liberal and Green parties stumbled. Many of the winning parties are racist nationalists and are now in charge o f reshaping the continents immigration policies
