Cleveland takes a major step toward citywide fiber with SiFi Networks The good news is that the $500 million internet access infrastructure that SiFi Networks will be laying out over the next seven years will come at no cost to taxpayers. But to make a profit the internet access has to be sold to Cleveland consumers. One has to wonder what the cost for internet access to Clevelanders will be to make a profit on the $500 million investment? And how many people will be able to afford it.?

Cleveland People’s Budget campaign is on, no matter what state lawmakers decide PB CLE organizers are hoping that even if the General Assembly bans participatory budgeting, passing Issue 38 in Cleveland will put enough pressure on Cleveland City Council to make them legislate it themselves. So an all out campaign will be on no matter what. Cleveland City Council has already tapped into its corporate sponsored Victory Fund to begin a massive ad campaign.

that yesterday was Indigenous People’s Day? If not. it might be because only a few communities in Northeast Ohio acknowledge or celebrate the day. And that shouldn’t be. The Cleveland Guardians changed their racist name only because they recognized that a majority of their fans supported it. As would a majority of Northeast Ohioans support a celebration of Indigenous People’s Day.

Nina Turner – Led Workers’ Rights Group Launches in Cleveland The group is called We Are Somebody. Its key initiatives include supporting union strike funds through grassroots donations, amplifying the voices of striking workers, advocating for workers’ wages, benefits and conditions and supporting workers on the front lines in whatever capacity they need. Good to see Nina back and working in Cleveland!

Ohio AG Clears Third Attempt for 2024 Anti – Gerrymandering Amendment Proposal Which is short term good news. But now the proposal heads to the Ohio Ballot Board of Bias and we all know what shenanigans they are capable of. It will eventually be approved. But one has to wonder if the approval will come in time to take advantage of the lucrative signature gathering opportunity at polling locations on November 7. And if preventing that is the Republican goal.

Yost takes the unusual step of issuing ‘ legal analysis ‘ of abortion, marijuana issues on the November ballot Does anyone really think that Yo – yo Yosts ‘ legal analysis ‘ is unbiased and objective? The only legal analysis needed is that the voters of Ohio, not Yost, will decide the legality of these issues in November, This is unusual because no Attorney General has ever done anything like this before. On the other hand it is sort of exactly what you would expect him to do.

Anti – abortion groups are at odds on strategies ahead of Ohio vote This is not a surprise since they know that their message cannot be the truth that a no vote on Issue 1 would mean that there would be no abortion access in Ohio. So what they are arguing about is which lie or deception might deceive enough voters to vote no. On the other hand the Yes on Issue 1 campaign’s message is clear and popular – freedom from government interference in one’s personal reproductive health decisions.

How Ohio can reduce poverty Increasing the minimum wage and restoring the Child Tax Credit would help. But the best suggestion in this article is something called the Negative Income Tax which could eliminate poverty completely. Funded by raising taxes on the wealthy, the Negative Income Tax would then give the extra revenue to people below the poverty level so that they will then have extra income to rise above it.

Israel declares war and approves ‘ significant  ‘ steps to retaliate for surprise attack by Hamas Most of the media coverage gives little or no context. Hamas is shown as the ruthless invader killing or capturing innocent civilians and of course Israel has every right to retaliate. But what about the decades of bombing’s that Israel has launched into Gaza that have also killed innocent civilians? And what about the apartheid like conditions Israel imposes on the people of Palestine? All done of course with the complete backing of the United States.

Kevin McCarthy has been ousted as speaker of the House. Here’s what happens next This was the first time in history that a speaker has been voted out in the middle of a term. What happens next is sure to be a clown show as lunatics like Jim Jordan are jockeying for position to get elected. But what about the Democrats? They have 210 votes and 218 is needed for a new speaker to be elected. Might they be able to back a moderate candidate and control the process and if not why did they support McCarthy’s ousting in the first place?

Major cases SCOTUS justices will consider in the new term. The docket already includes cases on the intersection between the first amendment and social media, gun rights, racial gerrymandering and the power of the executive branch when it comes to regulation. And oral arguments will be heard on issues such as medication abortion and transgender rights. And the likely scenario is that we’ll cringe when their decisions are handed down on these issues.

Triage and Transformation Strategies for the Climate Emergency Recognizes what may be a sad reality. We may be getting to the point of no return and there is minimal chance of real action by our government to do what’s needed to reverse climate change. So triage becomes the best course of action, meaning that climate disaster prone areas should begin to prepare for future disasters that are certain to come. The preparation also suggests huge population shifts as people begin to see that it’s not feasible to even live in disaster prone areas.
Black Lives Matter

The dismal tradeoff on police violence in America Argues that the good news is that the BLM protests have undeniably brought attention to deep – seated issues of racial inequality and police brutality. There is also good news that the widespread use of police body cams has reduced the number of police killings. But the bad news is that this awareness has also laid bare the deep divisions in our nation as we grapple with the best path forward to achieve racial justice.

Sen. Tim Scott rebuked for saying LBJ’s welfare program was worse for Black families than slavery Uncle Tom Tim has once again proved that he is worthy of the nickname that we have given him. The comment was made at the clown show known as the Republican Presidential Debate and was of course designed to appeal to the mostly white racist audience. And sadly it worked, He drew one of the evening’s loudest rounds of applause after he said it.

Black women, in new survey less positive about local policing than Black men It is not a surprise that Black Americans’ perceptions of policing in their community remain more negative than white Americans perceptions, but the gender gap seems to be more pronounced among Black men and women. And of course there is overwhelming statistical evidence that Black Americans are more likely to be stopped by police and are killed by police at a higher rate than any other group.

Court picks new Alabama congressional map that heightens Black voting power The new map maintains Alabama’s one existing majority – Black district and nearly adds a second one, boosting the Democrats chances of flipping a seat in the state. A panel of federal judges approved the new map last week after versions drawn by the states Republican – controlled Legislature were struck down for diluting the power of Black voters.
Immigration

Biden administration waives 26 federal laws to allow border wall construction If you’re thinking that you’ve travelled back in time to before 2020 and you misread Biden and it should be Trump, you’re partially correct. The funds Biden is using for this section of the wall were actually appropriated by the Trump administration in 2019. But Biden can take full credit for waiving the 26 federal laws. He did that all on his own with executive action. This  is clearly also part of his re – election strategy to act like a Republican on immigration issues.

Biden to start giving foreign aid for deportations Which is also clearly part of his re – election strategy to act like a Republican on immigration issues. This scheme is to give Panama $10 million so that they can deport South American migrants long before they reach the US border. One has to wonder how many of these poor people who will be deported by Panama have legitimate asylum claims and therefore have a legal right to enter and remain in the US.

New York City moves to suspend ‘ right to shelter ‘ as migrant influx continues The city filed a request last week asking a court to suspend the requirement when there is a state of emergency or when the shelter population increases too rapidly. But what is the endgame? People living in streets, parks and on the subways. Is that what New York City really wants?

If you feel like you’re hearing a lot about immigration, here’s why. The recent increased media coverage corresponds with the recent increase in the number of migrants crossing the U.S. – Mexico border. And major cities, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Denver have had large numbers of migrants bussed into their cities by the fascist governors of Texas and Florida. These political stunts always get major media coverage in the large markets.
