Tonight!

CCPC People’s Budget ( PB CLE ) Meeting Tuesday, September 12 from 6:30 to 8 pm. The People’s Budget is a charter amendment on the ballot in Cleveland this November. It would give Cleveland residents over the age of 13 the ability to directly decide how 2% of the budget (about $14 million this year) is spent on projects in the neighborhoods. How is public input from the neighborhoods going to be organized? Who’s going to decide which projects get included in this part of the budget? And will other parts of the budget be affected by what PB decides? Is this a good idea? If you want these questions answered or have other questions about the charter amendment please attend this meeting with PB CLE representatives. Please click here to register for the event and to submit a question After registering you’ll receive an email with the Zoom link.

Browns: clocking ticking on stadium deal There are four main takeaways from this speculative piece.1) The city is offering no direct financial assistance for renovations or a new stadium 2) A new deal must be in place to extend the Browns’ lease within the next few months 3) Locations in Brook Park and Highland Hills have already been identified as suburban locations for a new stadium and 4) Mayor Justin Bibb may have a better chance of re – election if he let’s the Browns move to the suburbs and doesn’t give them millions in tax dollars.

Cleveland labor unions come out against ‘ People’s Budget,’ as possible compromise collapses According to PB CLE the deal collapsed because City Council didn’t want to negotiate. According to City Council the deal collapsed because there wasn’t enough time to work out a deal before last Friday’s deadline. What do you think? Find out more tonight at CCPC People’s Budget ( PB CLE ) Meeting.

Gateway, the nonprofit managing your tax dollars for sports facilities explained The Gateway Economic Development Corporation allocates funds collected from the Sin Tax for maintenance and repairs to Progressive Field and Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. The problem now is that revenue from the Sin Tax is not keeping up with the demand for maintenance and repairs

Cleveland looks to private lenders, stimulus spending to help fix the city’s complicated housing problems While City Hall welcomes KeyBank’s $2.5 million donation to the city’s fund for home repairs, Cleveland’s housing needs go far beyond what officials have put on the table so far. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb is a former KeyBank vice president. Do you think KeyBank may want a favor somewhere down the line?

Abortion Rights Groups Ask Ohio Supreme Court to Order Full Amendment Text for November Ballot You may recall that a few weeks ago the Republican controlled Ohio Ballot Board of Bias decided that Right to Life talking points should be in Issue 1 on the November ballot, It should be a no – brainer that the actual amendment should be on the ballot instead. Let’s hope the Republican controlled Ohio Supreme Court sees it the same way.

The Catholic Church will campaign against Ohio’s abortion – rights amendment. What about separation of church and state? Because this is an issue and not a partisan political campaign, churches are legally allowed to campaign and keep their tax exempt status. What the church is trying to do is impose their religious beliefs on everyone else. And that is not what abortion rights advocates are seeking. The word ” choice ” allows for religious beliefs.

Ohio redistricting critics ask the state Supreme Court to dismiss their own lawsuits This is only for the congressional districts and the reason is simple. If allowed to redraw the maps the fascist Republicans would likely gerrymander them even more to make what is now a 10 – 5 Republican majority into a 13 – 2 majority. And unlike last year the Ohio Supreme Court is now controlled by fascists  who would likely uphold whatever new maps are submitted.

Redistricting reform backers again submit proposal to overhaul legislative mapmaking After gathering 1000 more signatures with the revised language, Citizens Not Politicians have again submitted the petition to Ohio Attorney General Yo – yo Dave Yost for approval. Fingers crossed that this time the language is approved. And then fingers crossed again when it goes to the Ohio Ballot Board of Bias for approval.

Biden faces negative job ratings and concerns about his age as he gears up for 2024 The most alarming news from this CNN poll is that 46% of all registered voters say that any Republican presidential nominee would be a better choice than Biden in 2024. The somewhat good news is that 44% of all registered voters say that any Democratic presidential nominee would be a better choice than Trump in 2024. Biden and Trump’s approval rating both come in at 35%,

UAW’s clash with Big 3 automakers shows off a more confrontational union as strike deadline looms The automakers, which are making billions in profit, haven’t even come close to negotiating a fair contract with the 146,000 UAW members across the country. who are threatening to strike when the current contract expires on Thursday. We wish our UAW brothers and sisters good luck in negotiations over the next few days..

IRS cracking down on 1,600 millionaires over back taxes The initiative also affects 75 large businesses which the IRS says owes hundreds of millions in back taxes. The funding for this initiative was made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act which all Republicans opposed. Republicans also claim to oppose high deficits which the collection of back taxes can help reduce. We wish the IRS good luck in this effort.

Canada issues travel advisory warning over U.S. states’ LGBTQ+ laws The country’s Global Affairs Department did not specify which states, but is advising travelers to check the local laws for their destination before traveling. Concerned Canadians who check on the laws in Red states are likely going to be appalled at what they see.

Black Lives Matter

Republicans are at war with corporate America over diversity Republicans have long called themselves the champions of free market capitalism. But now many favor regulations and laws that would prohibit businesses from voluntarily adopting policies promoting diversity, equity and inclusion for women, Black, Hispanic and LGBTQ Americans and people with disabilities.

If the feds are serious about police reform, they should stop encouraging bad policing For decades the Federal Department of Transportation has been encouraging local police departments to make more low – level traffic stops. The problem with this is that many racist police officers assume that a Black driver who commits a traffic violation must also be a dangerous criminal.

From the Central Park 5 to the Scottsboro 9, Trump’s long history of racism is still being written As Biden’s support continues to decrease among Black voters it is important to remember Trump’s past that is documented in this article. It is also important to remember that the fascist Republicans have been working hard to whitewash or outright erase African American History in public schools around the country.

The US has a long history of state lawmakers silencing elected Black officials and taking power from their constituents Republican lawmakers in Georgia are preparing to use  the recently passed Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission Act to remove Fani Willis from office because of her prosecution of Donald Trump. But this is not an aberration in southern history about how Black officials are treated when they go against the wishes of the white majorities in the gerrymandered state legislatures.
Immigration

Immigrants, refugees build trust, connecting through Newcomer Navigators as the city prepares to have coordinator The Newcomer Navigators are guiding immigrants and refugees through the many details that come with settling in a new place, including finding a place to live, transportation and a job. Cuyahoga County is currently funding the program. Let’s hope this very worthwhile project prospers and expands.

Afghan female soldiers and others in asylum limbo deserve citizenship Most of the 82,000 Afghan refugees brought to the United States two years ago were admitted under a temporary immigration status known as humanitarian parole. There is no pathway to U.S. citizenship for them except to apply for asylum and wait for years for a hearing along with the other 2 million pending cases.

An asylum – seeker died in immigration custody. His family wants answers Ernesto Rocha Cuadra’s family say they were notified of his death only when another detainee called them days later. He had filed grievances alleging physical mistreatment by the facility staff and also repeatedly complained to his family. An ICE panel had recommended him for release in November, but officials at his detention center declined to release him.

Rural counties are hemorrhaging population. Immigration can fix that In Ohio and Across the country, 77% of rural counties have been losing working – age people since the Great Recession of 2008 – 2009. The rural population today tends to be older and past working – age. Immigrants tend to be younger and willing to work in agriculture. Eventually we’re going to either have to import workers or food.
