Abortion Access Petition Delivery People Needed
The ask is that you have petitions at your house and be willing to deliver them to people near you who are willing to gather signatures. We would also ask that you be willing to train them and follow up on getting on getting the completed petitions back. We are hopeful that we can have delivery people available throughout the County so we can make it as easy as possible for petition distribution and signature gathering. If you think you might be willing to volunteer for this very important task please call me (Steve) at 440-220-1874, or respond to this email and I’ll explain further.

At Cuyahoga County Progressive Caucus Meeting, Strong Arguments Against Subsidies for Browns Stadium Innovation This is Scene Magazine’s coverage of our meeting last week. Highlights include that the city still owes $53 million in bond payments for the original stadium and that renovations could cost $500 million to $1 billion and a new stadium up to $2 billion. And of course the big question – who pays?
Plant explosion leaves town with fear of lead exposure and few answers Remember the explosion in Oakwood Village last month? CLASH could not get answers from the Ohio EPA about whether or not they were looking for lead contamination. Yvonka Hall said that there are protocols for jumping into a disaster and is critical of the Ohio EPA for not treating the Oakwood Village explosion as such.
Cleveland launched a massive initiative three years ago to tackle the city’s lead problem. Here’s how it’s going Progress has been slow despite the $111 million available to tackle the problem. The city’s lead poisoning rate is about four times the national average. Our friends at Signal Cleveland will be looking at this issue closely over the next year and we’ll let you know what they find.
Cuyahoga County Considering Pay – to – Stay Legislation That Could Protect Renters From Evictions Pay – to Stay legislation allows renters to pay late rent before their eviction court date and avoid eviction for not paying the rent.. Although County legislation can be overturned by municipalities this is still symbolically good news.
Inside Cleveland’s historically mild winter No one missed frequent snowstorms and brutally cold temperatures this winter. But as you might have guessed, climate change is the cause. The arctic is now warming three or four times as much as the rest of the world. Would you rather have the consequences of a completely melted polar ice cap or our normal cold winters?

Messages in ads opposing the proposed Ohio abortion amendment are raising eyebrows The amendment says nothing about parents’ rights in the case of abortions but the ad, which is full of lies, says it does. The ad also mentions gender reassignment surgery, which has nothing to do with the abortion access amendment. The biggest lie of all though is the name of the group that spent $5 million on the ad – ” Protect Women Ohio “
The hidden costs and pitfalls in House Bill 1’s sweeping tax rewrite Is an excellent op – ed by our friend Zach Schiller from Policy Matters. It describes how the proposed flat tax is really just a giveaway to the wealthiest Ohioans and offers little or nothing to the rest of us. Zach will be at our April Membership Meeting to talk about the proposed Ohio budget ( see details below )
Ohio Supreme Court Appointee in Abortion Case Tied to Anti – Choice Pregnancy Center Judge Matthew Byrne served on the Board of a Crisis Pregnancy Center and is very open about his conservative and pro – life religious values. Do you think he will look at the Ohio Constitution and make an objective legal decision? Seems like the only hope is to get the abortion constitutional amendment passed this fall.
How East Palestine Rail Disaster Could Impact Ohio’s Soil, Drinking Water Most of eastern Ohio’s water supply flows through old underground mines. The spring rain will wash whatever chemicals are on the surface down into the shafts where it will float straight into the groundwater.
New Ohio Senate bill targets ‘ liberal bias ‘ on college campuses And of course they are copying the Florida fascists by looking at curriculum to make sure nothing bad about white people is taught. The result here and in Florida would be that quality professors and students would go elsewhere.

The Four Quadrants of American Politics Describes why Congress doesn’t work. Democrats hold a commanding edge over the GOP in districts where the majority is nonwhite and where the majority has a college degree. And Republicans hold the edge over Democrats in districts where people are mostly white and without a college degree.
Silicon Valley Banks Collapse Shows Little Has Changed for Big Banks Since 2008 Every now and then, a development embodies everything that is wrong with an era. The collapse is one such development, the culmination of many years of financial recklessness, corporate entitlement and corrupted political decision – making.
Eyeing re – election, Biden breaks with progressives on some hot – button issues Biden is laying the groundwork to try to neutralize politically thorny issues Republicans hope to use against him. But climate, crime and immigration are all big issues and he will need an active, energetic progressive base if he decides to run.
If Biden doesn’t run, would Bernie be the best alternative? Thought this might interest some of you. Bernie has made it clear he won’t run if Biden does. But his new book, “It’s Okay to Be Angry About Capitalism,” and the book tour he is on may be laying the groundwork to run if Biden doesn’t run. Don’t think Bernie would break with progressives on hot – button issues.
2024 Republican primaries may be a rerun of 2016 The Republicans have mostly winner take all primaries that allows a winner with a plurality to take all of its delegates from that state to the convention, In 2016 Trump won most of the early primaries with a plurality because of the large number of candidates. That chilling possibility looms in 2024.
Black Lives Matter
Whatever happened to Cleveland’s Black Women and Girl’s Commission It doesn’t exist yet – nine months after Mayor Bibb and City Council formally agreed to create the body. The idea for the commission came after a study which showed that Cleveland ranked dead – last among major U.S. cities for Black women’s educational prospects and overall well being, and second to last for health outcomes.
As Tyre Nichols case shows, Memphis police academy significantly lowered standards in recent years The Memphis Police Department lowered its standards at its training academy in order to fill a growing number of vacancies. Bad idea, The result was some very bad and outright dangerous cops would eventually wind up on the force.
For Black Mayors, Any Sign of Imperfection Means The Ax Getting voted into office isn’t enough. Black mayors barely have enough time to turn their cities around because first and foremost have to prove themselves by making their cities ” safe. ” Just ask Lori Lightfoot in Chicago
‘ Woke ‘ is being used to describe everything and nothing. What does it actually mean? The original Oxford Dictionary definition from 1917 was ” well informed, up to date.” The current definition is ” alert to social and racial discrimination and injustice.” Republicans of course would prefer that you are not well informed or alert to social and racial discrimination and injustice.
GOP Blames Silicon Valley Bank’s Failure on a Black Lives Matter Donation That Never Happened Tucker Carlson began the lie on Fox News that the bank had collapsed because it made a $ 73 million loan to BLM that wasn’t repaid. The actual amount the bank loaned to BLM was $ 0 which is what those of us who are ” woke ” suspected all along. Wouldn’t Tucker’s name sound better and be more accurate if the first letter was an F instead of a T?
Immigration
Stricter U.S. migration controls keep illegal border crossings at 2 – year low – for now The Biden administration plans to replace Title 42, which is set to lapse on May 11 with a sweeping asylum restriction that would allow the government to quickly deport migrants who fail to seek refuge in other countries on their way to the U’S.
Texas Republicans propose state immigration police force The latest in the state’s continued push to test the federal government’s authority over immigration. Part of the plan includes deputizing private citizens along the border to patrol and track down people crossing the border. What could possibly go wrong?
America’s immigration system is a nightmare, and it’s forcing tech companies to move jobs outside of the country The tech industry relies heavily on work- based visas to bring talented people into the country to work. The difficulty in getting the visas is causing the companies to hire people to work remotely in other countries
